Description

A quality George II slim figured oak cased brass dial longcase clock by Peter Haythornwaite of Kirkby Lonsdale, fully restored and working c.1750. The slim proportioned solid figured oak case with dental moulding below the hood cornice, red walnut pillars either side of the glazed hood door and complementing Greek key design moulding to the top of the trunk. The slim trunk with quarter columns either side of the long, slim, moulded edge door. Canted corners to the base, moulded plinth below with small ogee bracket feet to the base. Brass dial with matted centre and scroll design decorative engraving, which includes a date aperture and cartouche with the makers name; cast spandrels to the corners along with the original blued steel hands. The 30 hour movement with anchor escapement and bell striking on the hour, plus original weight and pendulum. Peter Haythornwaite, originally from Lancaster is recorded as working in Kirkby Lonsdale from around 1711 until his death in 1760 and wound and repaired St Mary's church clock in the town.  He and his wife are buried in the church yard and his son Peter II followed him into the trade. This fine example with a superior quality case typical of his clocks is presented in superb original condition, fully serviced and working.
