An outstanding late C17th oak six plank coffer with superbly carved front in original unrestored condition c.1690. The single plank top with moulded front edge and sides, hand forged iron fastenings for the original hook and eye hinges showing to the rear edge. The sides solid plank sides shaped at the base to form a foot at each end, the front superbly carved in a stylised tulip design with chip carved relief and moulded base rail; original steel lock plate to the centre. Hand sawn unpolished oak back with fastenings for the hinges showing through to match the top. Opens to reveal a clean ...interior with candle tray set to the left side and old papers adhered to the elm base board. Superb mellow colour and original patina, low proportions.
