A fine quality late George III mahogany cased marine stick barometer by Hall & Hawkes with hinged gimble in superb fully restored and working condition c.1820. The very slim mahogany case with hinged door to the top section, makers name and securing loop sat above. The hinged door used to keep the sea air off the scales when in use. The door opening to reveal two angled scales with weather predictions to the left side and pressure scale to the right along with vernier marker; mercury action barometer tube set to the centre. The inside of the door with matching thermometer sca...le, and polished brass reservoir guard to the base of the red alcohol action thermometer. Long slender figured mahogany trunk with slightly bowed sides, and polished brass cistern cover to the base. Mounted in the original swing arm gimble to allow the barometer to be sat flush against a wall or away from the wall. Presented in immaculate crisp condition, the movement fully overhauled, scales resilvered and casework cleaned. Measures 37" long x 1.5" wide x 2.25" diameter at the brass cistern cover. Gimble measures 4" diameter at the backplate x 9.5" deep when hinged away from the wall. Stock number 42310.
