A superb quality George IV solid silver wine jug with acanthus leaf and grape vine decoration, weighing 27 troy oz, hallmarked Glasgow 1824. The solid silver vessel with bellied base sat on a slightly flared foot, inverted band below the rim with applied cast silver grape and vine design decoration running continuously around both sides. The spout with chased acanthus leaf design decoration, matching decoration to the scroll design handle. Slightly domed hinged lid with scrolled over thumb plate to aid opening, cast silver leaf and bud design finial set to the centre; th...e hinged lid opening to reveal a clean interior. Bears the makers mark for Glasgow silversmiths Mitchell & Sons trading between 1822 and 1831, specialist in this kind of piece, along with clear hallmarks to all sections. Presented in superb dent free condition with a deep shine. Measures 9" wide from handle to spot edge x 6" diameter at the centre of the vessel x 8" maximum height. Stock number 41149.
